Liverpool made it 58 points from a possible 60 in the 2019-20 Premier League season with a comfortable 2-0 win at home to Sheffield United on Thursday.
Jurgen Klopp’s side were ahead inside four minutes when Mohamed Salah scored the club’s quickest goal of the season. The Egyptian tapped home from close range after a George Baldock slip gifted Andy Robertson time and space on the left-hand side of the penalty area. Salah was later denied by a superb save in the first half from Sheffield United goalkeeper Dean Henderson. In the second half, Salah saw a cross hit the inside of the post before the ball was picked up by Henderson on the goalline.
Liverpool’s own goalkeeper, Alisson, was rarely troubled en route to keeping a fifth consecutive clean sheet, but the game was not out of sight for the visitors until Sadio Mane doubled the score just after the hour mark. The Senegalese forward tapped home from a yard out after his initial effort was saved by Henderson.
Victory moves Liverpool 13 points ahead of Leicester City and with a game in hand as the Reds remain on course to set a new record Premier League points tally.
