Spurs 0-1 Newcastle: Magpies produce upset
Tottenham Hotspur were handed a shock defeat at their new stadium by Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United on Sunday.
The Magpies had lost their opening two games under their new manager before picking up a rare three points in the capital.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side looked blunt in front of goal as Harry Kane’s only effort all game was a mishit in the third minute of stoppage time.
Newcastle had taken the lead in the 27th minute when club record signing Joelinton found plenty of space between the two centre-backs to collect a chipped pass and coolly tuck home with his second touch.
The visitors produced a solid defensive performance for the remaining hour or so as the likes of Kane, Son Heung-min and Christian Eriksen failed to cause Martin Dubravka too many problems in the Newcastle goal.
Spurs had claimed a shock point at Manchester City last weekend but this defeat means they only have four points from their opening three games and are already five points behind leaders Liverpool.
