Aston Villa picked up their first Premier League points since winning the EFL Championship playoff final in May with a 2-0 victory at home to Everton on Friday night.
Dean Smith’s side looked the better for the majority of the game and were ahead on 21 minutes when Jota’s through ball was met by Wesley’s well-timed run before the Brazilian finished one-on-one. Michael Keane had been caught flat-footed in the Everton defence.
The visitors would have ended Friday night top of the Premier League with a victory but their best opportunity of the first half fell to Dominic Calvert-Lewin who produced a tame effort down the middle of the goal from 10 yards out.
Substitute Theo Walcott spooned an excellent opportunity late on before Anwar El Ghazi sealed the three points for the Villans with a solo effort in the fifth minute of stoppage time. It was the Moroccans third effort of the game and he’d only entered the field of play in the 77th minute.
