Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the game’s only goal as Arsenal started the 2019-20 Premier League season with a 1-0 win at Newcastle United on Sunday.
The Gunners looked the better side in possession before the Gabon striker produced a fine finish after controlling Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ cross with a great first touch. The young right-back’s assist came after winning possession in the opposition’s half.
Steve Bruce was an unpopular appointment to replace Rafa Benitez over the summer and based on Newcastle’s performance in this game it could be a long season for their fans.
Club record signing Joelinton had the only notable chance for the Magpies but shot straight at Bernd Leno in the first half. Other than that the Arsenal defence looked very comfortable away from home; a rarity under Unai Emery since the Spaniard took charge at the start of last season.
Arsenal will be looking to make it two wins from two when they host Burnley next weekend, whilst Newcastle travel to newly-promoted Norwich City.
