Tottenham Hotspur scored three times in the final 20 minutes to come from behind to beat newly-promoted Aston Villa 3-1 in the opening game of their 2019-20 Premier League campaign.
The EFL Championship playoff winners took the lead through John McGinn after only nine minutes and the Scotland international missed an opportunity to double the Villans’ lead later in the first half.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side made a slow start to the game but pressed for the equaliser in the final half hour. The introduction of Christian Eriksen helped change the game as the Dane increased the creativity and pace of the game in Aston Villa’s half.
Spurs’ equaliser came in the 73rd minute when summer signing Tanguy Ndombele produced a cracking strike from 20 yards.
Aston Villa couldn’t cope with the hosts after that and finally fell behind five minutes from time when Harry Kane produced a good first touch and a fine left-footed finish inside Tom Heaton’s near post to give Spurs a 2-1 lead.
The England international sealed the points in the final minute of the game with his second of the game – a rarity for Kane in the month of August.
